For your assigned character (Hagar, Pilate, Ruth), please answer the following question. Take note of AT LEAST one significant quotation (more is better).  You may refer to evidence in ch. 4 that relates to this question, if you wish.

What issues and themes does Morrison want to explore through the women of Song of Solomon?  What recurring motifs and images (concerning women) do you see?  How are they significant?  Do the stories/significant events of chapter 5 make you sympathize with your assigned character? Why or why not?Be complete and thorough in your response

  2. Morrison uses Ruth as a symbol of women who let a sexist society define them and and are stuck in that state of relying on men for their support. This image was contrasted when Macon had first told her to abort Milkman and she stayed firm and didn't do as he said. I really don't sympathize with my character because I feel her ways of pleasure is through incest and I understand that she wants attention. It that's not the way to get it. -SanJuana Aguilar

  3. Morrison uses Ruth to show the dependence that some women have toward men and how much it can affect their lives. Throughout the novel we see women being abandoned by men either intentionally or unintentionally. In Ruth's case her father's death marked her abandonment as she strived for attention and he was the only one that ever truly gave her that feeling of pleasure. The manner in which she received that pleasure, however, was very unnerving and wrong which is why I wish Ruth had found an alternative method to feed her desire.
