Hamlet 2.2 and 3.1 2/5

Hamlet's Truths

Prepare dramatic monologues using only Hamlet's Words

Monologue 1 - Analyze Hamlet's interactions with Polonius. What's he really saying? What truths does he tell? What puns and double entendres? What might they mean? Then use Hamlet's words to create a monologue that reflects these truths.

Monologue 2 - Analyze Hamlet's interactions with Rosencranz and Guildenstern. What truths does he tell them in lines 234 - 317? Again consider the puns, metaphors, and language. What is he really saying? Then construct a monologue from Hamlet's words that reflect these truths.

Consider:

Hamlet's Interactions with the Player: lines 436 - 537: What is the story of Hecuba? Why is it so important to Hamlet? What are Hamlet's reactions to the Player's performance?

Paraphrase and Analysis

"O What a Rogue . . . ."  What is Hamlet really saying and how does he say it? What truths are here? Have you heard any of this before? How does his language reflect his mind?

Then write a line by line direct paraphrase of this soliloquy.

Read Act 3 scene 1

Mind Fields and The Effects of This Good Lesson Keep Due 1/28

The Minds of Hamlet and Claudius

Now that you've met these two characters, draw graphic representations of the mind of each on separate pages AFTER the 1.2 log. Include their character traits, how you see their minds working, feelings (attitude/tone words), and at least three 3 quotes that capture them at least.

 Read and Log 1.3

Meet The Other Family

Paraphrase in modern language and compose a script in modern colloquial language of this scene.

What are your opinions of Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes?

Include these AFTER your 1.3 logs.

Hamlet 1.2 - Write responses like these between your scene logs.

Literary Terms

Examine Claudius' Speech (the order of his address, the rhetorical devices - antithesis, equivocation, diction, juxtaposition) and interactions ll.1 - 120; What does the manner of his language reveal about his character?

Examine lines 66 - 95. How does this interaction between Hamlet and Claudius reveal the innermost thoughts (subtext) of each. In other words, what does each really want? How does each really feel? What does Gertrude want? How do you know? Support your answers with text support.

Consider Claudius' use of the Royal "WE" with Hamlet in these responses. What do the shifts in tone signify about the Mind of Claudius?
