Close Reading

For each reading section you will need to select two passages for analysis -

Explain: Who, What, Significance, Relation of passage to work as a whole, Why you chose the passage. Include a discussion of how the passage is representative of the author's style.

Character Log by Chapter - 

Document Major life experiences, her reactions, her expectations, your expectations. Use quotes and passages to support your observations.

1. Their Eyes Were Watching God (TWEEG) Chapters 1 - 4

     a. Pay attention to the motifs in these chapters and be prepared to discuss them.

     b. How do the 1st lines of each chapter lead the reader?

     c. explain the contrast of the 1st two paragraphs in the novel.

2. AP MC exam reflection: Place in binder behind exam.

     a. Which passages were most difficult and why?

     b. Which specific questions and question stems troubled you?

3. Poem - After Apple Picking

 This poem isn't necessarily about death (though this is certainly one way to read it), because things in lit are rarely as simple as that; but it is about sleep and dreams and  . . . . Try to unpack the sleep motif in this poem. What does sleep represent? 

  The apple / apple picking motif represents something far different from the apple motif in the Bible. How is it manifested here and what are the possible meanings of its various representations?

    

A Reminder

If you are intent on improving your "A Worn Path" Thematic Statement/analysis grade, you will need to turn in your responses to the 25 questions by 8:30am October 2, 2015! You know who you are.
